THE DOPPLER EFFECT
By: Arthur Trace
Much like the distortion of sound waves in the scientific definition of The Doppler Effect, the theatrical group aims to magically distort the laws of nature and human existence. At least, that’s my outlook on what the group, The Doppler Effect is capable of accomplishing. However, more importantly, The Doppler Effect is a creative springboard in which the members will continue to grow as artists.
For quite some time, I have known Francis Menotti, David London, and Rick Maue and their ability to think outside the box as magicians. But, it was not until we all decided to work together as The Doppler Effect that I realized the creative power the group was collectively capable of producing. This realization came to me, late one night during a telephone conversation in which we were all brainstorming ideas for a theatrical magic show. In this telephone conversation, an endless stream of ideas dealing with altering an audience’s perception through magic poured out of each one of us. The experience of that initial conversation as The Doppler Effect was inspiring because we all worked well together in conceiving some very interesting ideas.
Much like a band, members of The Doppler Effect contribute in a way that is completely unique to their performance style and way of thinking. Fostering this type of creative atmosphere provides the potential for artistic growth for each member as well as the group as a whole. In fact, seeking a project that would take me away from my own comfort zone as an artist was why I became involved in the group in the first place. Therefore, my involvement in The Doppler Effect is somewhat selfish as I look towards this group as a catalyst in furthering my own creativity. After all, what are friends for!
